The Captain’s Crafts

Original Japanese Gyotaku and stone crab claw jewelry, made by hand from our own days on the water. Each piece is one of a kind, reflecting the fish or claw it came from.

Japanese Gyotaku

Artwork made directly from the catch.

Gyotaku (“fish rubbing”) is a Japanese practice from the 1800s: fishermen inked a catch and pressed paper onto it to record what they had landed. The result is a true-size portrait of one particular animal.

Brett creates each Japanese Gyotaku with squid ink on rice paper or linen, then signs and dates the piece. After the artwork is made, the fish is prepared for the table.

Stone crab jewelry

One claw, thoughtfully used.

Florida law permits harvesting both legal-size claws from a stone crab. Captain Brett harvests only one, then returns the live crab to the water. Leaving one claw gives the crab a better chance of survival and regeneration. It is a deliberate choice, not a legal requirement. Harvested claws are cleaned, preserved and made into necklaces and collar charms.

Commissions

Caught something worth remembering?

Tell us about your catch, the day on the water and where you would display your Japanese Gyotaku. We can discuss whether a commission is possible, along with timing and pricing.
