Our Story

A family that lives by the water.

The Captain Co. did not start as a business plan. It started as the way one Southwest Florida family already fished, ate, made things and celebrated.

The Captain

Captain Brett Low

USCG 100-Ton Master · Commercial spearfisher

Brett has spent most of his life spearfishing, diving and running boats in Southwest Florida. He holds a U.S. Coast Guard 100-Ton Master license and has worked as a commercial spearfisher, which teaches you quickly what the water will and will not give.

He runs Free Spirit Adventures, creates Japanese Gyotaku and makes the stone crab jewelry. His approach is simple: harvest with care, harvest only what you will use, and use it well.

The Founder

Marena Low

Marena grew up around her father’s boats, catches and Japanese Gyotaku. She saw that those habits already formed a set of connected ideas: respect for the harvest, craft, teaching, and family tradition.

She founded The Captain Co. to give those ideas one home, to present what already exists honestly, and to explore carefully what could come next.

What we believe

Harvest. Create. Conserve.

Harvest.

Harvest legally and with care, and understand the fishery you are part of. Recognize that harvesting always has an impact.

Create.

Make thoughtful use of each harvest: a good meal, a Japanese Gyotaku that preserves the fish’s likeness, or a claw turned into a keepsake.

Conserve.

Teach how fisheries work, share what we know, and keep asking how to waste less. We are learning too.
