Our Impact
Honest notes, not big claims.
We are a Southwest Florida family that harvests responsibly and makes thoughtful use of each catch. This page describes our practices and the ideas we are still exploring.
Today, and next
Here is what we do today, what we are looking into and where we would like to go. We have kept it in plain language.
| Area | What exists today | What we are exploring |
|---|---|---|
| Teaching how a fishery works | Florida law permits harvesting both legal-size claws. Captain Brett harvests one per crab, then returns the live crab to the water. This is his choice, not a legal requirement, to give the crab a better chance of survival and regeneration. | Sharing the one-claw practice and its reasoning with charter guests. |
| Using more of the harvest | Fish scraps not used for dog food are used as bait in our stone crab traps. | The Captain’s Canine is exploring suitable fish byproducts for dog food; no products are for sale. |
| Handmade craft | Captain Brett makes original Japanese Gyotaku and stone crab claw jewelry. | Japanese Gyotaku commissions are discussed individually. |
| Community and tradition | Our family hangs a cast net as a Christmas tree each December. | We are considering ways to share the tradition; no events are scheduled. |
